Project Description
Why flip a first grade classroom? Story details aren’t sticking with my students as they do not understand that reading is thinking. While phonics, vocabulary and sight word instruction develops readers, it is thinking that transfers information and builds reading comprehension skills. Strategies currently practiced throughout the year during small group instruction are not being transferred to authentic reading experiences. A limited time for guided reading instruction and strong number of parents asking for ways to support their child’s reading development has lead to an innovative solution, the flipped, or inverted, classroom.
A flip would change the dynamics of my reading instruction. Topics that used to be taught in class will be taught at home prior to learning a new topic. An at home video will provide a way for students to build background knowledge and a simple task will help families be involved in the learning process. Classroom time will be opened up for discussions, application of the skills in authentic reading experiences, along with collaborative, technology based projects to show evidence of learning. Student success will be measured by an ability to articulate verbally or through a project that various comprehension strategies are used on a daily basis. Flipping first grade reading instruction will help students understand that reading is thinking while building 21st Century skills.
